​Support for the Advanced Higher

​Bombadil Publishing

Applications are invited from practitioners in early learning and childcare centres, and primary and secondary schools for the post graduate certificate Streap. This distance-learning course forms part of master-level learning.  It has a particular focus on terminology, skills and knowledge connected to teaching in Gaelic Medium Education.  For more information, please contactsp.smo@uhi.ac.uk. ​Read, Write Count – Leugh, Sgrìobh, Cunntais

Read, Write, Count is a new literacy and numeracy campaign aimed at children in P1-P3 as well as their parents and carers.  It was launched by the Cabinet Secretary on 17 August 2015.  The aims of the campaign include generating enthusiasm about reading, writing and counting.  Read, Write, Count will provide books and other activities to support literacy and numeracy. This will include:

• bespoke packs for those in P1-P3 who are learning through the medium of Gaelic
• training to support the development of Bookbug sessions through Gaelic.

The Education (Scotland) Bill is still progressing through the Scottish Parliament.  It includes important provisions for Gaelic.  The Education and Culture Committee of the Parliament will publish its report on the Bill soon.  It will be interesting to have the Committee’s views and any recommendations that they may wish to offer.

​Cuilean Craicte

Cuilean Craicte publishes chapter books for independent readers (aged 7-12 approx) through a crowd-funding model.  This is backed by GME parent subscribers. The aim of the project is to promote independent reading for pleasure, increase vocabulary and encourage childrens’ use of Gaelic beyond the classroom.

Small numbers of the first six books published are still available to buy.  The cost is £50. Authors include Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Terry Deary and Tony Bradman.  For more information, please contactcuileancraicte@gmail.com.

​Ceòlas Uibhist Ltd

​Bòrd na Gàidhlig will be holding their annual conference for newly qualified teachers of Gaelic Medium Education 3-18 on Wednesday 17th of November in The Albany Centre, Glasgow.

​The programme will include presentations and workshops on developing Gaelic language skills, the role of partnerships with the community in the curriculum, bilingualism, the use of Glow and additional support needs.
